Mechanism of action

  • Phenolic compounds present in thyme extract, especially thymol, carocrol and polymethoxyflavones are responsible for the anti-cough and anti-spasm effects of the plant. In addition, honey relieves night coughs and clears slimy phlegm from the chest and lungs.
  • Due to the production of hydrogen peroxide in the body, honey has strong antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, which is why the World Health Organization has confirmed its anti-cough effect. Honey has a positive effect on improving upper respiratory tract infections and can be consumed by children over 12 months old.
  • In the study of Paul and his colleagues (Ian Paul, et al., 2007), the effect of honey on night cough was investigated in 105 children aged 2-18 years. The results showed that honey significantly reduced the intensity and frequency of coughs and improved the quality of sleep.
  • In a multicenter clinical study, 154 children aged 2 months and 14 years (mean age 4.4) with bronchial cough were treated with thyme syrup. Compared to the beginning of treatment, the severity of cough improved in 93.5% of patients.
  • This effect is attributed to the flavons of thyme extract that inhibit the response of specific receptors to acetylcholine, histamine and norepinephrine.
