Mechanism of action

Pharmacology studies recommend the use of arbutin extract as an auxiliary treatment for inflammatory conditions such as contact dermatitis, edema, arthritis, and as an anti-blemish agent. Arbutin extract, due to its strong antityrosinase activity, the enzyme responsible for the oxidation of L-tyrosine in the path of melanin biosynthesis in human skin melanoma and the cause of skin pigmentation, prevents the production of melanin, the activity similar to superoxide dismutase, and the ability to absorb ultraviolet rays as a prominent whitening agent. It can reduce brownish yellow plaques and the accumulation of skin pigments. On the other hand, the tannin in this extract is astringent and causes firmness and prevents sagging of the skin. Arbutin extract is also anti-inflammatory due to the presence of ursolic acid and also prevents skin aging. Allantoin is another ingredient in this plant that restores damaged skin cells.
